WTH is ESG?

Suddenly it seems like everyone is talking about ESG. But, what is it exactly? Why should we care? And, what can we do about it?

Essentially ESG initiatives (Environmental, Social, Governance) are sustainability and social responsibility practices which measure how companies interact with and affect their external communities. It’s becoming more important since there’s a correlation between ESG performance and financial performance. Additionally, consumers and employees are also demanding increased accountability in these areas and expect companies to do their part to improve the world we live in.

Mandatory reporting requirements are still being established and standardized, however, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), investors and shareholders expect companies to be open and transparent about their performance, goals and initiatives in all three categories. In fact, more than 90 percent of S&P 500 companies now publish ESG reports in some form.

Although this year has continued to be challenging globally, we can say for certain that we are seeing a renewed momentum to address the social criteria surrounding business sustainability - in particular, workplace diversity, equity and inclusion. In fact, in 2021 more than 70 large companies established and communicated their gender diversity targets, including Airbnb, Bank of America, Bloomberg, Coca-Cola, GE, Intel, McKinsey, TaskRabbit, and Xerox.
