In the midst of a whirlwind of global catastrophes, several critical factors have led to creating the perfect storm known as The Great Resignation. In meteorological terms, a perfect storm is created by a rare set of occurrences and unpredictable factors, however one could argue that the employer-employee relationship has been brewing tension for some time now.

1. Employers Need Employees

2021 was a year of resignations with a staggering 47 million Americans voluntarily leaving their jobs. As a result, The Conference Board reports the number one challenge CEOs face in 2022 is the labor shortage – making their top priority attracting and retaining talent.

Juggling business and employee needs can be a balancing act, but it should come at no surprise that a people-first company culture drives growth.

To gain a competitive edge, employers must focus on key retention strategies

  • Provide flexibility for when, where and how work is conducted
  • Commit to continuous feedback and development
  • Recognize achievements
  • Encourage well being and balance

By reimagining the traditional work environment, employees are likely to feel more engaged and connected to their organizations.

2. Employees Want Connection

The hybrid workplace doesn’t have to mean a loss of collaboration and meaningful relationships. As an employer, you should create a sense of belonging by:

  • Building internal networks and communities
  • Offering professional support through mentoring and coaching
  • Checking in regularly with your employees

3. We all Benefit from Diversity

According to a McKinsey & Company report, there is a positive correlation between workplace diversity and business performance. And, while recognizing the need to diversify the workforce is a great first step, don’t overlook the importance of:

  • Supporting underrepresented groups within the organization
  • Developing inclusive leaders
  • Fostering an ally culture
